Munnar has always been a favorite destination for tourists across the world and it still is one of the ’10 must see paradises in the earth’. In the last decade Munnar has witnessed a large influx of tourists and the current forecasts suggests that the trend is going to continue for years to come. Despite being a world famous tourist spot, tourists to Munnar had to struggle to find a cost effective and reliable method of connectivity from the major cities of the region to Munnar.
The fact that Munnar is located in the western ghats 1800 meters above the sea level meant that Munnar has no airstrip and no rail connectivity either. And there is no signs of Munnar ever going to get these in the near future. Added to that, the state transport corporation was also not interested in connecting the southern cities to Munnar. What all these meant to the tourists is that they had to always depend on the private tour operators and taxi segment for their travel needs.
Bangalore to Munnar by bus was not an option until the early 2000’s. From the early 2000’s Munnar witnessed a steady flow of tourists from the major cities of neighboring states as well as northern India. Particularly there was a steady flow of travelers from Bangalore to Munnar. This resulted in private interstate bus operators starting bus services between Bangalore and Munnar, followed by the state transport corporations of Kerala and Karnataka. Now there are 4 direct buses plying from Bangalore to Munnar every day. One each from Karnataka RTC and Kerala RTC. 2 buses from the private sector (KPN and SRS travels)
